Gilbert R. Mears, age 85 of Barryton, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011. He was born August 28, 1925 in Detroit the son of Raymond and Madeline (Gilbert) Mears. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army where he was a P.O.W. during World War II and also served during the Korean War. Gilbert married Dorothy Worst and made their home at the Chippewa Vista, near Barryton. Gilbert had lived at the Vista for almost 50 years. He was a member of the V.F.W. of DeWitt and the American Legion of Bath. He is survived by his son, Loren Mears of Bath; 2 daughters, Betsy (William) Wrench of Howard City and Pam Mears of Bath; a sister Lois Deitz of Holt; 4 grandsons, Shawn(Becki), Dan, William and Travis; 2 great-grandchildren, Alexus and Spencer. Besides his parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, 4 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday March 22, 2011 at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton with burial at Flake Cemetery to follow. The family will greet friends at the funeral home Tuesday from noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Gilbert's name be made to the American Cancer Society.
