Obituary

Gertrude Mae Helmer, age 95 of Sears, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Moorecare AFC Home, where she has resided since 2011. Gertrude was born on February 9, 1918 in Cheboygan to Harold and Stella (Julliette) Cripe. She attended High School in Flint where she was raised. On August 15, 1936 she married Colin LeRoy Helmer in Barryton and they made their home and raised their family on the farm in Sears. Gertrude was a wonderful homemaker, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of the Barryton Church of God, and enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting and playing euchre with friends when she was able. Gert is survived by two sons: Darwin (Sharon) Helmer of Sears, Gordon (Donnie) Helmer of Barryton; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Gert was preceded in death by her beloved husband Colin in 1995; parents, Harold Cripe and Stella Cripe Humphey; two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Marcella Bracy; one brother, Harold Cripe; daughter-in-law Norma Jean (Porter) Helmer; and a step-great-grandson, Tanner Born (Smaltz). Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2013 at the Barryton Church of God with Pastor Gary Bryan officiating. Interment will be at Flake Cemetery in Barryton. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17th at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton.
