Gerald G. Halvorsen, age 86 of Bay City, formerly of Big Rapids, and Jenison, passed away Friday, December 8, 2006 at Brian's House (hospice) in Bay City. He was born March 14, 1920, in Deerfield Township, Mecosta County to the late Herbert and Jessie (Tift) Halvorsen. On May 26, 1943, he married Gwendolyn Wulf. She preceded him in death on May 8, 2003. Gerald and Gwen lived in Mecosta County until 2001. They moved in December 2001 to a senior complex, Sunset Village, in Jenison, MI. Gerald is survived by: one son, Harlan (Amanda) Halvorsen, of Bay City, MI; one daughter, Marcie (Jack) Bickler, of Traverse City, MI; four grandchildren, Matt (Kari) Halvorsen, Daniel Halvorsen, Carrie (Tucker) Darby, and Paul Bickler; and three great grandchildren, Anna, Emily, and Nathaniel Darby. Also surviving Mr. Halvorsen is a brother Don (Deloris) Halvorsen, of Lake City, MI and a sister, Donna MacNaughton, of Santa Clara, CA; and several special nieces and nephews. A special friend Gracia Tower also survives him. Gerald was a Farm Bureau Insurance agent from 1964 until his retirement in 1985. Prior to that he was the Manager of the Stanwood Marketing Association, a farm elevator. He also farmed the family farm with his brother Don in Mecosta County. He was very active in the Mecosta County Farm Bureau. Also he served on numerous community and governmental boards, including the Morley Stanwood Community Schools Board of Education, Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District Board of Education, Deerfield Township Board of Trusties, and Mecosta County Jury Commission. He was a Charter Member of the Stanwood Lions Club. A funeral service will be held, 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood. Officiating will be Rev. Dominic Tommy. Friends my call at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. or from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 11th. Burial will take place in Higbee Cemetery. The family would like to extend its sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Sheffield Bay, assisted living facility, Brian's House, and Bay Regional Medical Center for the dedicated service to Gerald over the last days of his life.
