Gerald "Jerry" H. Covert, 84, of Barryton, passed away Friday, January 12, 2024. He was born at home in Barryton, MI, on the Covert Farm, on September 27, 1939, the son of Roy and Geneva "Fern" (Adams) Covert. Jerry was a 1957 graduate of Barryton Rural Agricultural School.
He was employed by Accident Fund of Michigan in Lansing for over 25 years. During this time, he installed the first computer and programmed it for the office and for Michigan State Universitys Stadiums. Jerry and Susan Badgley began dating in 2001, and they married on January 26, 2012 in Hawaii. Together Jerry and Susan enjoyed traveling, playing golf, spending time with family and woodworking; they started their own business with the products they made. Jerry also enjoyed making gifts for his children and grandchildren.
Jerry was a talented musician; he loved to sing with his family and with the band Shades of Grey, where he also played bass guitar. He liked to spend time at Williams Cafe, ride his motorcycle and dirt bikes, read westerns, and working in the yard, specifically mowing the lawn. He was a member of the Civitan Club of Lansing, Barryton Lions Club, and was on the Fork Township Cemetery Board. He was also a huge fan of Michigan State.
Jerry loved to share one of his favorite sayings, "I asked God for all things, that I might enjoy life; God gave me life so that I might enjoy all things."
Jerry will always be remembered for his big heart, his sarcastic sense of humor, and for his tremendous generosity for all those around him. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He was known as a baby whisperer and a people person.
Words cannot express how much of an impact Jerry had on everyone around him. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Covert of Barryton; nine children, Barb England of Barryton, Chuck Covert of Georgia, Janet (Dennis) Palmer of the Upper Peninsula, Holli (George) Kunzelman of California, David Covert (fiance Amber), Jessica (Nick) Rottman of Indiana, Jenna (Chad) Iverson of Lansing, Lyndi Root (Kyle) of Redford, and Emily (Scott) White of East Lansing; 18 grandchildren, Pepper, Jeremy, Jessi, Ben, Jerrod, Andrea, Trevor, Grant, Brooke, Caleb, Shaelynn, Breanne, Leah, Mya, Kennedy, Vincent, Jonah, and Elijah; 8 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Gary (Jewell) Covert of Barryton and Darlene Stafford of Indiana; sister-in-law, Yvonne Covert of Georgia; nine brothers-in-law; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends; friendly family dog Shadow.
