George E. Derby, a lifelong resident of Big Rapids, passed away after a short illness, Friday, April 21, 2023, at the age of 80. He lived on the farm from birth, George was the son of Frank and Louise (Cramer) Derby, born on August 10, 1942. George was a 1961 graduate from Big Rapids High School. He honorably served his country in the United States Army, where he was deployed most of his time in Germany.

George farmed all his life, including Jernstadt Dairy where he was currently employed. He could always be found on his John Deere Tractors. George was a member of Charity Baptist Church in Paris and the Greasy Fingers Two Cylinder Club, where he served as Treasurer. George was an avid sports fan; he enjoyed watching all sports.

George is survived by his wife, Brenda Derby of Big Rapids; two children, Kay Derby of Garden City and Dennis (Heather Foster) Derby of Big Rapids; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Derby of Rockford; step-son, David Bouman of Colorado; step-son-in-law, Steve Venema of White Cloud; five grandchildren, Caitlin Rassmusen, Hailey and Lauren Ladner, and Joshua and Megan Derby; step-grandchildren, Alyssa and Sam Venema and Mahaila Bouman; one great-grandchild on the way; brother, Howard Rollo (Carol) Derby of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Edward Derby, and first wife Audrey Orr Derby.

A Memorial Service will take place 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2023 at Charity Baptist Church with Pastor Terry Wilson officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service Friday at the Church.

Memorial Contributions may be made in Georges name to his daughter, Kay Derby.
