Genevieve "Jean" Abrego, age 83 of Ionia, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids. She was born January 3, 1928 in Chicago, the daughter of Guadalupe and Beatrice (Ramirez) Garcia. Jean married Elias Abrego July 13, 1945 in Iowa and later moved to Detroit where they raised their family. She was a gypsy at heart and never liked to live in one place too long. She was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe from Monterey, Mexico and the Cornerstone Church in Vestaburg. Jean enjoyed church music, playing the guitar and the accordion. She loved spending time with her family and she will be dearly missed. Jean is survived by her 4 children, Julia (Gary) Walter of Chippewa Lake, Jean (Ed) Swartz of Taylor, Olivia (Monty) Jensen of Edmore and Don Abrego of Ionia; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, Elias Abrego; 3 children; 2 grandchildren and 2 sisters. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
