Gene W. Thompson, age 76 of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011 in Alma. He was born June 23, 1935 in Big Rapids, the son of William and Marion (Carr) Thompson. Gene graduated from Big Rapids High School. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army after serving in the Color Guard. In 1969 Gene married Patricia Hathaway in Owosso, where they raised their family. He enjoyed teaching and mentoring his friends in archery, dancing, reading and bow hunting. Gene had a sense of humor and was very intelligent; he was a great Trivial Pursuit partner. He loved his family and they were important to him. Gene is survived by his daughter Jeannine (fianc Chris Downer) Thompson of Gaines; 3 stepchildren, Dean, Liz and Hal; a sister Linda Wood of Florida; a sister-in-law Bertha Thompson of Rodney; a special friend Patricia Hathaway; many nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a brother James Thompson; a sister Mary Totten and brothers-in-law Kenny Totten and Phil Wood. A memorial service will be held 6:00 p.m. at the Rodney United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 with Pastor Ed Milam officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions in Gene's name may be made to the Community Lunch Program at the Third Avenue United Methodist Church in Big Rapids.
