Evelyn Ione Dunn, age 96 Big Rapids, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021 at her home. She was born April 10, 1925 at her grandmothers home in Big Rapids the daughter of William and Faun (Marvel) Totten. Evelyn graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1943. She married William Dunn on December 7, 1945 (Pearl Harbor Day). Evelyn played her part during World War II by her work at the River Rouge Ford Motor Company where she was an authentic Rosie the Riveter. As she continued her working career in Big Rapids she became the first woman bus driver, working from 1965 1989.
She was one of the longest members of the Third Avenue United Methodist Church in Big Rapids. Evelyn was an active member of her community, attending weekly church dinners, walking a two-mile loop at the Big Rapids Middle School and she was a member of the church knitting club. Evelyn enjoyed decorating wedding and birthday cakes, feeding deer and birds, watching wildlife and she was still driving until just recently.
Evelyn will be dearly missed by those who knew her. She is survived by her six children, Bonnie Dunn of Florida, Peggy Heinmiller of Midland, Michael (Wanda) Dunn of Florida, Ruth Ann (Randy) Wilson of Rodney, Debbie (Chad) Morgan of White Lake, and Mark Dunn of Big Rapids; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Elsie Grosbeck of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband William Dunn in 2007, four brothers Thurman, John, Kenneth, and Meredith, three sisters Maxine Howard, Juanita Benson, and Betty Lintemuth.
Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Bill Davis officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the funeral service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Evelyn will be laid to rest at Pine Plains Cemetery in Big Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made in Evelyns name to Third Avenue United Methodist Church in Big Rapids or Mecosta County Commission on Aging Housekeeping.
