Elmer J. Swartwood, age 71 of Stanwood, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born February 15, 1940 the son of Leroy and Margaret (Doxtater) Swartwood in Stanwood, where he was raised. Elmer graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1958. He worked in the oil fields and water wells. Elmer was an active member of the Am Vets and the Stanwood Eagles, where he was the trustee and former treasurer. He loved animals and watching sports; especially when it was his children. He was a loyal friend and valued the time he spent with his family. Elmer is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Mischelle of Stanwood; his children Liz (Tim) Swartwood-McMurtrie of Jackson, Thomas Swartwood of Seattle and Amie Swartwood of Big Rapids; a granddaughter, Nichole Wick; 3 great-grandchildren, Kenzie, Austin and Skye; 6 sisters, Esther (Robert) Schultz, Mary Snyder, Sandra (Dan) Golden, Jan (Duaine) Moore, Maria Walls and Beatrice (Renne) Vera; many nieces and nephews; special friends Estelle Derwin and Barabara Davis. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Delores Waller; a brother, Lawrence Swartwood and a brother-in-law, Robert Snyder. The family would like to thank Dr. Wolshleger, Tamara Vermeulen and staff. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 10th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Bill Buck officiating. The family will greet friends 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 9th at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Elmer's name to the family.
