Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Saathoff, age 86 of Mecosta, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at home following a brief illness; she was surrounded by her family. She was born January 8, 1930 in Dansville the daughter of Fred and Wilma (Schram) Wilson. Betty married Wilbur "Bill" Saathoff on June 9, 1951; together they made their home in Jackson and began their family. The Saathoffs moved to Reed City where Betty did volunteer work at her childrens school and many of their outside activities. Bill and Betty later moved to Horsehead Lake where Bill enjoyed retirement and Betty continued her community involvement. She still volunteered at school; she worked tirelessly at the Morton Township Library helping with fundraisers and holding offices on several committees. Betty was one of the volunteers that helped make the Library what it is today. She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church where she served as a Youth Leader and was a member of the "Wednesday Night Supper Girls". Betty is survived by her four children, Dena (John) Durante of Mecosta, Robin Saathoff of Shepherd, Kipp Saathoff of Largo, FL, Kurt "Chad" (Kari) Saathoff of Blanchard; nine grandchildren, Sara Durante, John Durante, Melissa Morris, Brad Fulkerson, Eli Saathoff, Gage Saathoff, Tanner Saathoff, Tamar Crise, Nik Saathoff; four great-grandchildren, Nolan, Madison and Hunter Morris and Harper Fulkerson; two brothers, Fred (Pam) Wilson of Stockbridge, Gene (Sue) Wilson of Lansing; two sisters, Juanita (Jerry) Spitzley of Fowler, Joyce Sober of Illinois and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wilbur "Bill" Saathoff; a son William "Billy" Saathoff and a sister Joan Cielen. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at New Hope United Methodist Church near Mecosta with Pastor Greg Buchner officiating. Memorial contributions in Bettys name may be made to either the Morton Township Library or New Hope United Methodist Church Youth Group.
