Eleanor E. Fowler, age 89, of Hersey passed away Thursday, October 11, 2007, at her home. She was born in Gratiot County, October 19, 1917, to Reuben and Sylvia (Halsey) Cheney. Graduating from Ithaca High School at age 15, Eleanor later received a teaching certificate from Midland County Normal. She married Alfred A. Fowler, June 12, 1937, making their home on a farm near Ashley. After raising their children, she went back to school, received her teaching degree from CMU and became a kindergarten teacher in Ashley for 10 years. Upon her retirement, she and Alfred built a home on the Muskegon River near Hersey. Eleanor enjoyed literature, vocabulary, and writing to her family and friends. She was active in her community and church. Eleanor is survived by three daughters: Ruth (Howard) Crowell of Hersey, Alice (Ron) Selfridge of Chippewa Lake, and Susan (Tom) Fabus of Hersey, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, one great great grandson, two brothers; Glen and Carl Cheney and many nieces and nephews. The family is extremely appreciative to caregivers: Joan Goldammer, Joan Hawes, and Dorothy Kardos. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Fowler, May 30, 2007, two daughters, Margaret (Bob) Tanner and Jane Fowler, sister, Laura Johnson, infant sister Lois, brother, Ralph Cheney, and her parents. Funeral Services will take place 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2007, at Hersey United Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Nichols officiating. Family will greet friends on Sunday, October 14, 2007, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Eleanor's name may be made to the Hersey United Methodist Church or Big Rapids Community Library.
