Elaine F. Van Os, age 86, of Big Rapids passed away Monday, December 3, 2007 in Fremont. She was born in Flint, Michigan on July 11, 1921 to Earle F. and Bessie Mary (Barnes) Walsh, and spent her childhood in Milford, Michigan. Her maternal grandparents and many relatives lived in the Big Rapids area and the family returned here when Elaine was a young woman. In 1959 she married Carl P. Van Os and they lived the majority of their married life at their home in rural Big Rapids. Carl preceded her in death on October 8, 2007. Elaine enjoyed bingo and card playing; she liked to fish, and she was an avid reader. She held down a majority of jobs in her younger years, which included working in a war plant in Flint during World War II, driving a taxi cab in Grand Rapids, and working in Fashion Industries in Big Rapids in the 1950's. Whatever job she attempted she did well, whether it was building a house, planting a garden and canning up the harvest, or fishing. Elaine was a member of the American Legion Post 98 Ladies Auxiliary, AmVet Red Arrow Post 1941 and Eagles. Elaine is survived by three children Darlene Koyle of Big Rapids, Carl N. Van Os of San Francisco, CA and Marilyn (fianc Dave Brunette) of Muskegon. She has four grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Yvonne Walsh of Big Rapids, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; two brothers, James Walsh of Big Rapids; Donald Walsh of New Port Richey, FL; and one sister, Phyllis Walsh of Big Rapids. Funeral services for Elaine will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Daggett""Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Reverend Edward Slate officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening December 5th. Memorial contributions in Elaine's name would be welcomed by W.I.S.E. Women's Shelter.
