Elaine V. Alton, age 80, of Big Rapids passed away early Friday morning, August 11, 2006. She was born August 30, 1925 in Watertown, New York to Keith and Gladys (Freeman) Alton. Elaine graduated from Antwerp High School, Antwerp, New York, in 1942 as Valedictorian. Elaine had her Doctorate Degree in Mathematics and had taught for several years at Ferris State University and Purdue University. She was Professor Emeritus at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis. Elaine was a proud member of the United Church in Big Rapids, member and past secretary and treasurer of the Family and Education Club of Big Rapids, former member of the Pilot Club in Indianapolis and former member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics . Mrs. Alton had several personal accomplishments throughout her life including: a guest speaker at various engagements, award for Excellance in Academic Counseling, Indianapolis Profession Women of the Year and several citations listed in the Who's Who publications. Mrs. Alton was a remarkable women and teacher to all of those around her. She is survived by a brother "" Charles (Helen) Alton of Antwerp, NY Five nieces and nephews Van Johnson & Gloria Roberts of Rodney Jim Johnson & Loni Curtice of Paris Terry (Noah) Prior of Theresa, NY Kelly Bridge & Dale Pitts of Antwerp, NY Keith (Amanda) Alton of Cape Vincent, NY Several great nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents & a sister, Evelyn Shepherd. The family will greet friends on Sunday, August 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Funeral services will take place on 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Costello Funeral Home in Alexandria Bay, NY. Burial will be at Antwerp Hillside Cemetery.
