Edward "Joe" Vandelinder, of Big Rapids, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2010. He is survived by his dearly loved wife of nearly 62 years, Wanda; beloved daughter Linda Racine and husband Vern; much loved grandson, Ryan Racine and his wife Erin and great granddaughters, Kenzie, Kady, and Megan. Brothers Ralph "Paul" , his fishing buddy, and Jim survive him, as do their wives, Uschi and Lynda. He felt blessed to have had the love and companionship of many nieces and nephews, particularly nephews Frank, Michael, David, Pat, Tony, Bobby, and Tom. He made many friends in the Big Rapids area since moving here after retiring as general foreman of a steel tubing company in the Detroit area, 33 years ago. After retirement, he became a part of competitive horseshoe throwing, winning many trophies and tournaments. At one time, he was ranked as one of the top 92 horseshoe throwers in the world and was invited to participate in the prestigious World Horseshoe Throwing Tournament because of his 65.3% ringer average. He made it to the Class A semi-finals, but lost in the finals and placed second in Class C. In later years, he refined his interest in bowling and derived great pleasure from bowling and competing with his friends and earned many trophies with them. Joe was always eager to help anybody, had a ready smile and a great "can-do" attitude, and a generous spirit. He valued his loyal friends, particularly Curt Ray and Al Bickel, and loving family, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
