Obituary

Edna Marie (Diehl) Hatfield, 88, of Remus, Michigan, peacefully joined her husband, Donald, in heaven on June 16, 2014. Edna was born in, Wheatland Township, Mecosta County, Michigan on December 4, 1925 to George and Alice (Schlegel) Diehl. She graduated from Remus Consolidated High School in 1943. On October 30, 1943, Edna married Don and they began 69 years of marriage together. During those years, Edna farmed along with Don on the family farm, Hatfield Farms. She was in charge of the asparagus crop; helped with the milking; all the while producing meals, not only for the family but also for the numerous high school students who worked on the farm during the summer. Her cooking ability was legendary..especially her desserts and homemade cookies. In addition, Edna was an active member at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Remus: she taught Sunday School and was involved in various women's groups. She was also part of the Remus Area Sewing Club, which met, and continues to meet, regularly for over 50 years bringing together a group of area women to sew and enjoy each other's company. Over the years, Edna and Don opened their home to a number of foster children, providing them with a family atmosphere which allowed for stability and personal growth. Edna is survived by Don and Edna's six children; Sherry (Tom) Marks of Mecosta; Janis Weston of Mt. Pleasant; Pam (Mike) Forbes of Rodney; Dennis Hatfield of Remus; Larry Hatfield of Remus and Jeffery Hatfield of Elkhart, Indiana. They were blessed with 11 grandchildren; David Weston, Craig Marks, Lara Sustrich, Jessica Johnston, Adam Forbes, Dawn Webster, Zach Hatfield, Maegan Eldred, Brooke O'Neil, Casey Hatfield and Jason Hatfield and 25 great grandchildren. Edna is also survived by a sister, Ellen Ruth Miller, and a sister-in-law, Lucille Schiffer. She was preceded in death by Donald, her parents; one sister, Frieda Hein; one brother, Arden Andrews; and one great grandchild, Marissa Marks. Edna's family would like to thank the compassionate staff of Spectrum Hospital, Big Rapids for their quality care and support during Edna's last days.
