Obituary

Edna May (Crandall) Bongard departed earth on June 25, 2011 to go be with her loving Heavenly Father for eternity. She was happily reunited with family and, after 70 years of marriage on earth, once again took the hand of Bill, this time never to part. Born in Stanwood on August 3, 1913, Edna was the daughter of Orlando G. and Rose May (Carlson) Crandall. In her 97 years on earth, she outlived her generation including brothers George, Charlie, and Franklin Crandall. Giving generously of her time, energy, and compassion, Edna devoted her life to caring for her children. Bonnie (Wayne) Cox, Marty (Sharon) Bongard, Kathleen (Dale) Cousineau, and Shirley (Kary) Frank thankfully remember and continually benefit from the wisdom and love she imparted to them. That love was evident in the times such as: Having made and served three full meals every day, come bedtime she would read "The Bobbsey Twins" to her children until they would have to shake her awake in order to finish that evening's chapter. With family all in bed, she could then be found doing her housework late into the night in order to keep her home as she thought it should be. Very special childhood memories were created when Edna served fresh tree-ripened peaches raised on their farm and warm homemade bread. A variety of vegetables and beautiful flowers from her large, thriving garden filled her table. The crocheted and hand-sewn gifts she made are valued keepsakes held by many. Grandma was always available to read with, hug, teach, and love her 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Edna's shared remembrances of life through the changing 20th century and stories highlighting the importance of family and friends are treasures that will not be forgotten. Edna showed concern and friendship for neighbors and community members through conversations, visits, and helping with whatever was needed. To honor her now, you may give to Great Lakes Caring (formerly In-House Hospice) or Northland United Methodist Church. A celebration of God's goodness throughout Edna's life will take place at 1 pm on Friday, July 1, 2011 at Northland United Methodist Church followed immediately by a luncheon there. Family and friends are invited to gather and visit at the Bongard family home (6450 190th Avenue, Stanwood) on Thursday, June 30 from 2 til 8 pm.
