Edith Mae (Ohls) Cady, 89, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born May 8, 1933 in Mount Clemens, Michigan the daughter of Bernice (Ohls) Randall and Milo Loop. Raised by her loving aunt Edith (Allor) Salem she attended school in Pontiac, Michigan; spending summers with her grandparents in Mecosta. Edith was an entrepreneur owning several small businesses during her lifetime including the original Eat restaurant on Maple Street and the Beacon Drive Inn near the airport. She earned a certificate as a CNA in the School of Health Sciences and Arts at Ferris State College. She was also employed at Ferris State University for many years and earned her Associate in Applied Arts (Social Sciences) completing an internship with the Mecosta County Commission on Aging and published an article, Butterfly Years and Altruism. She assisted two other women in starting the WISE program in Big Rapids. Upon retirement from Ferris, she was co-owner of the Metro Mart (rebranded as Cadys General Store and Nursery) and later worked in food service at the Mecosta County Jail. She was a life member of the Big Rapids Eagles Club 2535 Auxiliary, member of the American Legion 98 and started the Amvets Auxiliary 1941 and served as the first President (two terms) of the chapter in 1990. She loved to write stories, country music and sang in the band with her husband, George Cady. She also enjoyed karaoke and sang at many venues locally and supported the Reed City Fieldss Assisted Living singing with friend Ken Stephens and his band.
She is survived by her children, Larry (Joanne) Adams of Reed City, Connie (Raymond Stockdale) Randle-Morcom of Big Rapids, Julie (Kevin) Barttelt of Chelsea; stepchildren, Brian (Tina) Cady, Cindy (Jim) Cornell, Debra Wright, Jackie Jensen, Brenda (Don) Griffis, Faye (Daryl) Young, and Karen Cady; she was the proud grandmother to Brooke Adams and Jacob (Stacey) Adams, Eric (Jessica) Randle, Travis, Kaitlin and Caleb Barttelt, and Gary Adams Jr.; great grandchildren Austin, Evan, Bennett, Kaylee, Danika, Hudson, Azlyn and many step great grandchildren including special step grandson Dale as well as many other step grandchild; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Facebook friends. She was preceded in death by her husband George Cady, son Gary Adams and daughter Cathy Cady, parents, step sons-in-law Steve Wright and Steven Jensen, aunt and siblings Juanita (Blair) Kunkle, Emile (Katherine) Blair, John Blair, Dorothy Potrafa, Mary Dull and friend Ken Stephens.
A Festive Celebration of Life will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2023 at Pine Plains Cemetery in Big Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made in Edith's name to Animal Rescue Coalition (ARC) of Mecosta County.
