Douglas J. Schmidt, age 62 of Big Rapids, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Newaygo County Compassion Home in Fremont. He was born in Detroit on June 12, 1960, the son of Donald and Sally (Graham) Schmidt. Doug graduated from high school and attended Montcalm Community College and later Ferris State University, earning his Associate Degree in Electrical Power Technology. He married Jayne Baker on June 10, 1995, and together they made their home in Big Rapids. Doug enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also liked to watch sports and was an avid Detroit Lions fan. Doug is survived by his wife of nearly 28 years, Jayne Schmidt of Big Rapids; two children, Kali (Michael) Mazzenga of Clarkston and Kasey Schmidt of Big Rapids; his grandson, Logan Mazzenga; three step-children, Mark Danielson of Big Rapids, Steven (Jessica Johnson) Danielson of Big Rapids, and Derek Danielson of Reed City; two step-grandchildren, Braylan and Carly Danielson; two siblings, Jeff (Judy) and Sheryl; his best friend Jim Randall; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Marilyn Baker, and best friend Michael Holland. A Memorial Service will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2023, at Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood, where Doug was a member, with Pastor Gary Bondarenko officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at Church.
