Douglas Parker, age 70 of Big Rapids, passed away peacefully following a brief illness, Friday November 3, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 2, 1936 in Holt, MI to Clyde and Virginia (Ribbi) Parker. Doug began his working career in Detroit as a steel hauler and later created Wayne Michigan Transportation, a company he owned and operated for 20 years in Wyoming MI. In 1976 Doug bought property on the Muskegon River at the Davis Bridge in Stanwood. He had a dream, and developed that property into a family camp ground and marine business known as Parker's Landing. He sold the business in 2000 and then established a new family business, Parkers Marine, a little further down eight mile road. Doug grew up in a race car family and like his father began driving race cars in the 1950's. He raced with Richard Petty and A. J. Foyt and has remained an avid NASCAR fan his entire life. He is survived by: His loving wife, Lorraine of Big Rapids Children; Doug Parker of Caledonia Ken (Molly) Parker of Moline Mike (Doreen) Parker and Tom Parker all of Grand Rapids Judy (Steve) Moerdyke of Byron Center Robert (Mary) Eichler of New Jersey Todd (Missy) Eichler of Big Rapids His parents; Clyde and Virginia Parker of Livonia Sister; Wanda (Ed) Conz of Livonia Nineteen grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 7th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with burial at Fairview Cemetery near Stanwood. The family will greet friends on Sunday, Nov. 5th from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday, Nov. 6th from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Doug's name may be made to his family for a scholarship fund for students interested in the Marine business.
