Obituary

Dorothy Mae Randolph, age 92 of Big Rapids, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009. She was born September 29, 1916 in Buel Township, Sanilac County. She was the first born child of Albert and Cora (Straffon) Chadwick and had five younger sisters. During the First World War Dorothy's parents moved to Pontiac where her father was employed at General Motors. At the end of the War her father became ill and the family was moved to Croswell where her father soon was employed as a fuel delivery man for the shell Oil distributor. Dorothy and her sisters all attended the Croswell Public Schools from which Dorothy graduated in 1935. Dorothy was employed at the State Hospital in Pontiac where she worked as a nurse C2. On December 3, 1936, she married Bernard R. Randolph. The marriage took place in the bride's parent's home solemnized by the Reverend Hugh Townley, clergy of the the Croswell United Methodist Church. The young couple resided in Croswell and in 1940 Bernard was employed at Pontiac Motors until June of 1948. Bernard was approved as a Student Minister of the then Methodist Episcopal Churches and the couple was appointed to Sanford-Averill, west of Midland. The couple served for the next thirty years until taking the retired relationship of the West Michigan Conference. They purchased their home in Big Rapids in 1978. Dorothy is survived by her husband of a remarkable 72 years the Reverend Bernard R. Randolph of Big Rapids; 5 sons, Stephen (Peggy) of Hesperia, Douglas (Bonnie) of Spring Arbor, Dennis (Marjorie) of Northfield, MN, Thomas (Jo Ellen) of Midland and Charles (Sandra) of Big Rapids; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Marion Walsh of Port Huron and Marie (Max) Boyes of Croswell and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Virginia Schultz, Mary Jean Dolan and Donna Crull. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Big Rapids with Reverend Dean Prentiss officiating. Burial will be at Pine Plains Cemetery in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends Thursday (today) at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Memorial contributions in Dorothy's name may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Big Rapids or the Clark Memorial Home of Grand Rapids.
