Dorothy G. Dennis age 89 was born July 9, 1920 and went to be with the Lord March 31, 2010. Dorothy was the daughter of Clarence and Helene Stewart of Big Rapids. She attended Big Rapids High School and her best subject was Don Dennis the basketball player. She became his wife after graduating and they took on the world together until Don's death separated them in 1999. It was a marriage lasting 50+ years and gave them Jim, Sue and Bob as children, 6 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dorothy was a thrifty hard working home maker, gardener, lawn care specialist, deer hunter, fisherwoman, and enforcer of the moral rules that required church attendance by all the children under their roof. As Don's employment in the asphalt business moved the family to Fruitport, they picked up a great set of neighbors to add to the Big Rapids family of friends. As a member of the Fruitport Congregational Church, Dorothy appropriately became a leading member of the "Martha Circle." That was her best position as a worker bee getting things done for the church to include working hard in the kitchen for every event. After Don's retirement from the Asphalt business they returned to Big Rapids with Susan and purchased a home 100 yards from their previous home on the Muskegon River. They enjoyed fishing and gardening for a number of years until the passing of Donald and Susan. The past 4 years Dorothy has not been able to live independently and has stayed at Yorkshire Manor with assistance. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald W. Dennis and daughter Susan M. Dennis. Funeral service will be conducted by her son, Reverend Robert A. Dennis on Monday, April 5th at 2:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services. Memorial contributions in Dorothy's name may be made to the Charity Baptist Church in Big Rapids.
