Donn Trites, age 58 of Big Rapids, passed away Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids with his family at his side. He was born July 23, 1952 in Kalamazoo and was a 1970 graduate of the Culver Military Academy in Indiana. Donn worked in the automotive industry for a time. He saved every penny he made, because Donn had a dream. He came to Big Rapids and with his savings established Lost Mountain Ski and Paddle in Paris. In 1978 Donn and his partner, Don DeWitt moved into Big Rapids and established The Sawmill Canoe Livery. In 2004 they expanded the business to include the Hersey Canoe Livery. Donn realized his dream with a successful business that has been family operated for 32 years. He also studied to become a licensed realtor and has listed and sold real estate for the past 20 years. Donn loved the outdoors, not only in work but also in play; he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Donn is survived by his 2 sons; Adam (Steph) Trites of Stanwood, Eric Trites of Stanwood, currently serving in the United States Marine Corps; his father Robert "Doug" (Jane) Trites of Naples, Florida; 2 brothers, Douglas Trites of Augusta, MI, David (Patricia) Trites of Richmond, VA; a sister, Susann (Scott) Everett of Altmar, NY and several nieces and nephews. Donn was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Trites. There will be a Celebration of Life for Donn on Wednesday September 8th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. His family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Morley-Stanwood Sports Boosters or the Morley-Stanwood Outdoor Club.
