Donald E. Stensrud age72, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Monday, November 13, 2006 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma after a heroic battle with cancer. He was born January 7, 1934 in Grandville, the son of Elmer and Margaret (Waidlich) Stensrud. Donald was raised at Guilley Pond and was a 1953 graduate of Tawas High School. After serving two years he was honorably discharged from the United States Army where he was stationed in Korea during the Cold War. On November 2, 1957 he married Donna Penzien. Donald retired from the General Telephone Co. after 33 years and currently enjoyed working part time at Wal Mart in Mt. Pleasant. He donated his time to designing and constructing the church alter furniture at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant. Together with Donna they traveled in their motor home working in several Parks across the United States. Donald turned a small cottage on Halls Lake into a beautiful dream home. There were several things that Donald enjoyed; books by Louis L'Amour, hunting, fishing, carving, carpentry, movies, camping, water recreation, winter sports and especially playing cards with special friends. He had a profound faith in the Lord, loved his family and would never pass up the opportunity to see a friend when he was able. Donald's family will treasure the memories they hold. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Donna of Mt. Pleasant Four children: Daniel (Tricia) of San Diego, Calif., Debra (Steve) Engum of Boise, ID, Douglas of Ionia and Dyan of Mt. Pleasant Eight grandchildren: Karista, Nathaniel, Ian, Susanna, Michael, Mathew, Mike and Tara, four great-grandchildren: Rose Marie, Skyler, Brandon and Chloe, sisters Marie (Dallas) Heine and Gretchen (James) Klimek, brother David (Laura) and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Edgar and sister-in-law Phyllis. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2006 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Remus with the family greeting friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. Memorial Contributions in Donald's name may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
