Donald G. Saum, age 77 of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2010. He was born January 28, 1933 to Glen and Rose (Dufon) Saum of Newaygo. Don graduated from Newaygo High School in 1951. He served and was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1956. Don married the former Josephine LeCompte of Muskegon on July 25, 1959. She preceded him in death on April 30, 2006. Don was a long time member of St. Paul's Campus Parish in Big Rapids. After discharge from the Air Force he worked for Sanitary Dairy in Muskegon. Don then began a long time career with State Farm Insurance with his own agency in Big Rapids, being well liked and respected by his many clients locally and far reaching. He was a member of the Presidents Club of Ferris State University. Don is survived by his five children; Michael (Julie) Saum of Big Rapids, Susan (Michael) Pennock of Big Rapids, Kimberly Thompson of Birmingham, Alabama, Jill (Scott) Farley of Cadillac and Karen (Robert) Husulak of Dimondale; grandchildren, Nicholas Saum, Jeffery (Emilee) Saum, Eric Saum, Daniel Cook, Kerri Cook, Maryrose Cook, Brittany Pennock, Trace Pennock, Brookann Pennock, Brett Farley, Benjamin Farley, Bryan Farley, Kyle Husulak and Lauren Husulak; sisters, Louise Scheibner of Muskegon, Delores (Richard) Klamfoth of Muskegon, sister-in-law, Judith Anderson and husband William of Grant; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Virginia Birnie of Big Rapids and many, many close friends over the years. Don's grandchildren will remember him as a great supporter and faithful fan of their sports events. Preceding him in death is his beloved wife Josephine, his parents, Glen and Rose Saum, his brother, Glen Saum Jr. and his nephew S.F.C. Daniel Scheibner while serving in Iraq. Don will be forever remembered as a good man and worker who cared deeply for family and friends and a kind man to the many pets that came his and Jo's way through the years. A mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 23rd at St. Paul's Campus Parish in Big Rapids with Father Daniel DePew officiating. The family will greet friends on Sunday, August 22nd at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #98 firing squad. Memorial contributions in Don's name may be made to either the Humane Society or the American Diabetes Association.
