Donald G. Hess, age 62 of Howard City, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday January 14, 2020 at his home. He was born September 15, 1957 in Grand Rapids the son of Walter B. and Margaret A. (Maitner) Hess Jr. Don graduated from Kent Occupational High School in Wyoming, MI. He married his High School sweet heart, Gladys Bowen. Together they made their home in Kent and Montcalm counties, settling in Howard City over 20 years ago. Don was employed by Wolverine World Wide for over 40 years. He worked on the grounds crew at the Rockford Factory. Don loved the outdoors, both in his work and his play; he was an avid hunter and fisherman. The joy of Dons life was his role as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be forever missed by his family, including his wife of over 42 years, Gladys Hess of Howard City; three children, Angel Hess of Howard City, Brandy (Rodger) Swartz of Rodney, Dezaray (Brian) Hallaxs of Sand Lake; eight grandchildren, Sammi, Ashley, Hannah, Shane, Rodger Jr., Cody, Brian, Aaron; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Nevaeh; four brothers, Paul (Barbara) Hess of Wilmington, NC, Robert "Bob" Hess of Grand Rapids, John (Mavis) Hess of Kentwood, Vincent "Buck" (Tori) Hess of Lisbon Falls, ME; a sister, Anna (Leon) Hudson of Hartford; an aunt, Patricia "Pat" Hess-McCombs of; many uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his best friend Ajax the dog. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Laura Meissner, many aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will take place at a later date.
