Donald R. Heemstra, age 85 passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010. He was born July 3, 1925 in Grand Rapids the son of Dorothy (Stapp) and Ralph Heemstra. Don lived and worked in Grand Rapids for many years, moving to the Stanwood area 30 years ago. Don was a member of the Rogers Heights Christian Church. Don is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen J. Heemstra of Stanwood; 4 children Ronald (Ann) Heemstra of Willis, TX, Judy Brocato and Joe Hanichen of Byron Center, Shari (Jeff) Piccard of Wyoming, MI, Terri (Steve) Katsma of Rockford; 6 grandchildren, Nikki and her husband Mark Alkema, Philip and Timothy Piccard, Sabrina, Zachary and Travis Katsma and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by a son, Roger Craig Heemstra. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 18th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Scott Davidson officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Don's name may be made to the Rogers Heights Christian Church.
