IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald A.
Foreman
April 19, 1935 – September 18, 2022
Donald Amos Foreman, a long-time resident of Barryton, Michigan, died surrounded by family on September 18, 2022. An only child, Don was born on Good Friday, April 19, 1935, to Earl Foreman and Gladys (Rockett) Foreman in Coleman, Michigan.
Don graduated from Coleman High School in 1953. He served in the United States Army, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, from 1954-1956, stationed in Germany. Don attended Hillsdale College where he played football, then transferred to Central Michigan University and played baseball. He graduated from CMU with a teaching degree in 1960. Later he would earn a masters and specialist degree from CMU.
On September 6, 1958, Don married Linda L. Sasse in Coleman. They moved to Barryton where they raised three daughters and where Don began his teaching and coaching career. After spending one year at Marlette High School, Don and his family returned to Barryton in 1967, where he was an integral part of the consolidation of Chippewa Hills School District. Don spent the next 21 years at CHHS teaching industrial arts, PE, and serving as athletic director. He has the distinction of being Chippewa Hills first football, track, and cross-country coach.
Don retired from CHHS in 1988, but not from coaching. He was an assistant track coach at Alma College in 1989 and an assistant football coach at Ferris State University from 1989-1990. In 1991, Don was inducted into the Michigan Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Don followed his educational career with 30 years selling real estate.
In retirement, Don and Linda enjoyed numerous activities. Don was a member of the Barryton Lions Club, American Legion Post No. 473, and the Barryton Methodist Church. He served on the Village Council for many years, including as president. Don enjoyed spending time with family and friends, in particular at his Manistique cabin "with the guys," on Hilton Head Island with family, and during backyard Fourth of July camping with "50 of his closest relatives." Along with fishing and hunting, Don enjoyed golfing, bowling, and planting his garden. He continued to start cross-country and track meets for many years. Dons (and Lindas) favorite pastime, however, was watching grandchildren in their sports and activities.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 53 years, Linda. He is survived by three daughters, Sara (Jim) Hendershot, Sue (Rick Gunness) Temple, and Sally (Craig) Schafer; five grandchildren, Maegan (Mike) Giancola, Jordan Hendershot, Ty Schafer, Kylie (Ty) Lattimore, and Cade Schafer, along with many relatives.
Funeral services will be held at Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton on Friday, September 23 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM and on Friday from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made in Dons name to the Barryton Lions Club which provides yearly scholarships to Chippewa Hills High School seniors pursuing post-secondary education.
