Donald W. Campbell Jr, age 81, died Saturday, October 9, 2021 at his home in Big Rapids surrounded by family. He was born April 2, 1940 in Royal Oak, the son of Donald Sr. and Christine (Bowman) Campbell. Don served in the United States Navy until he was honorably discharged in 1964. He married the love of his life Cathy Truchan in Royal Oak on July 27, 1963. Don worked as a firefighter at Birmingham Fire Department for ten years, and later 19 years at the Big Rapids Fire Department. He was also the first chief of Big Rapids Township Fire Department. He was a jack of all trades; working for Carter Lumber, Wolverine, installing garage doors, plumbing, heating. He also built his "geodesic dome" house for his family. Don and Cathy spent many summers as camp hosts at Twelvemile Beach Campground on Lake Superior and were caretakers at Au Sable Point Lighthouse for one summer. He was a longtime member of Eagles Aerie #2353. Don loved his John Deere tractor and surprising Cathy with little things around the house. He was an innovative woodworker, and enjoyed hunting with his sons at Pigeon River and Manitoba, Canada. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Cathy of Big Rapids; sons, Kurt Campbell of Big Rapids, Chris (Korena Rolston) Campbell of Big Rapids; grandchildren, Harley (Zack) Goltz, Caleb (Shaylee Christiansen) Campbell and their mother, Anita Campbell, a very special friend; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and step-father, Jim Saintignon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dons name to Susan P. Wheatlakes Regional Cancer Center. Mass of the Resurrection will take place 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids with visitation an hour prior. Officiant, Father Jegar Fickel.
