Donald (Don) M. Hatfield, 89, of Remus, Michigan left for his final journey on Friday, September 6, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Don was born in Wheatland Township, Michigan on May 11, 1924 to Carleton and Mildred (Galer) Hatfield. The Hatfield family has been part of the farming community in the Remus area for 135 years. On October 30, 1943, Don married Edna Diehl and for the next 65 years they farmed Hatfield Farms together with their family. During those years, Don worked long hours on the farm, but also found the time to give back to his community. Education was of particular importance to Don and he served many years on various school boards including Remus, Mecosta-Remus and finally Chippewa Hills. Later, he was also a member of the Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School Board. Don didn't limit his community involvement to education, serving on the boards of Wheatland Township, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Remus Cooperative Creamery, Remus Historical Society, local Cooperative Elevators, Soil Conservation and the Federal Land Bank. He was active in the farming community not only as a dairy farmer but also as a 4-H leader and Farm Bureau member. Don is survived by his wife, Edna and their six children Sherry (Tom) Marks of Mecosta; Janis Weston of Mt. Pleasant; Pam (Mike) Forbes of Rodney; Dennis Hatfield of Remus; Larry Hatfield of Remus and Jeffery Hatfield of Elkhart Indiana. They were blessed with 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Lucille Shiffer of Plainwell. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Hatfield and one great grandchild, Marissa Marks. Don's family would like to thank the compassionate staff of Great Lakes Caring Hospice for their support and assistance. They would also like to acknowledge Don's many friends and neighbors for their visits and calls during his final days. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Remus with Pastor Jonathan Voss officiating. The community is invited to pay its respects to Don on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to Tuesday's memorial service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Memorials can be made to the Remus Area Historical Society or St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Remus.
