Dick Helderop, age 93 of Barryton, went home to be with the Lord on January 19, 2014 in Zephyrhills, FL. He was born Dirk Helderop Jr. on December 31, 1920 in Grand Rapids, MI to Dirk and Nealtje (Hoffland) Helderop. Dirk entered into the United Stated Army in 1942 where his name was transposed to Dick and has remained ever since. He was honorably discharged in 1944. He married Mattie Morlock in Lansing in 1959 and became step-father to 9 children 4 of which he helped raise. Mattie preceded him in death in 1991. In 1992 Dick found love again while at the bowling alley and later married Wanda Blodgett and they made their home in Barryton. Dick enjoyed bowling, fishing and gardening. He retired from Oldsmobile in 1979 and made his home at Lackie's Birch Haven. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 22 years Wanda of Barryton and her children, Jean James of Davison, Harry (Peggy) Blodgett of Boise, ID and Rosa (Brad) Sibilsky of Peoria, AZ; step-children Patty Jo (Gary) Hartsuff of Lansing, Linda Sandy of Lansing, Annie Morlock of IN; Fred Morlock of Walker and John (Kim) Morlock of Canyon City, CO; two baby dogs Gretchen and Charlie; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; four step-children Milton, Joyce, Blanche and Evelyn; four sisters and one brother. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., on June 7, 2014 at the Barryton of God with military honors to follow. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial donations in Dick's name can be made to the Barryton American Legion Post 473, the Barryton Church of God or charity of choice.
