Delores "Dee" Smith, age 85 of Mecosta, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024 at her home. She was born in Lakeview on June 10, 1938, the daughter of the late Dale and Viola (Gunckel) Root. She graduated in 1957 from Barryton Rural Agricultural High School. Dee married Jack Smith on March 8, 1958, at Faith United Methodist Church in Barryton. Together they made their home and raised three children in the house they built themselves. Dee was employed as a bus driver for Chippewa Hills School District for many years. She and Jack were members of New Hope United Methodist Church, where Dee was actively involved. She had many talents, including baking and making quilts. Dee was in the Canadian Lakes Quilt Club and bowled on a league in Remus. Dee and Jack enjoyed country dancing, participating in dance demos, and traveling in their motorhome. She is survived by her three siblings, Duane Root of Reed City, Eugene (Sue) Root of Barryton, and Janet (Walter) Jenks of Grand Blanc; sister-in-law, Barbara Root of Mount Pleasant; special friends, John Mayer and his family and Dena Durante; many nieces and nephews. Dee was preceded in death by her husband, Jack on December 18, 2023; three children, Gail Annett, Randy Scott, and Bradley Keith; two brothers, Ora and Harry Root; five sisters-in-law, Berdella, Helen, Sharon Root and Elaine, and Maxine; and two brothers-in-law, Wesley and Kenneth Smith. Funeral Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2024 at New Hope Global Methodist Church in Mecosta (formerly New Hope United Methodist Church) with Pastor Wayne McKenny officiating. The family will greet friends One Hour prior to the Funeral on Saturday at Church. Dee will be laid to rest with Jack and her children at Mount Hope Cemetery in Mecosta.
