David Michael Whiteside, age 43, passed away Sunday, August 03, 2008 at the family home near Big Rapids. He was born December 23, 1964 in Stanwood. David graduated from Morley-Stanwood High School and enlisted in the United States Air force. He was stationed at Scott Air force Base in Illinois with his specialty in Fire Protection. David was a highly decorated noncommissioned officer; his decorations and medals included; the Air Force commendation medal, the Air Force achievement medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with valor device (2 oak leaf clusters). He deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm. David is survived by; his daughter, Kristen Whiteside and a step-son, Zachary VanBibber both of Fairview Heights, IL, his parents, Donald and Donna Whiteside of Detour Village, sister; Pam (Jack) Baumunk of Stanwood, 4 brothers; Darwin Whiteside of Big Rapids, Earnest (Delia) Whiteside of Monroe, MI, Patrick (Carol) Whiteside of Stanwood, James (Brenda) Harris of New Mexico and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 6th at the Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, 407 Perry Street, Big Rapids with Pastor Ed Visser officiating. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Burial will be at Martiny Township Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #98 of Big Rapids. The family requests memorial contributions in David's name to Hospice of Michigan.
