David C. Elliott, of Big Rapids formerly of Ludington, passed away Monday, September 20, 2010 at the remarkable age of 105. He was born January 10, 1905 in Shiawassee County to Oscar and Ella (Drake) Elliott. David began his working career on the farm where his father was a sharecropper. He later attended business school and took up accounting. David worked for a public accountant, doing audits for several years and later worked a few years as an auditor for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. He had also worked for the Michigan Millers Insurance Company in Lansing. David eventually bought an insurance agency in Ludington, MI. He sold his agency and went into real estate earning his GRI from University of Michigan. David was a past president of the University of Michigan Real Estate Alumni Association. He retired from the real estate business in 1970. David was proud to be a charter member of the Optimist Club and strived to live by their creed. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Sylvia Elliott of Big Rapids; 2 daughters, Barbara E. Gilbert of Sun City, AZ, Sue (Clyde) Genter of Otto, NC; grandchildren, Rosemary (Bruce) Ray of Arizona, James LaRock of Kent City, Bruce Gilbert of Tennessee, George (Ruthanne) Gilbert of Big Rapids, Thomas (Dawn) Gilbert of Big Rapids, Brian (Luz) Gilbert of Arizona, Jeff (Margie) Genter of Bradenton, FL, Kim Cameron of Marble, NC; Great-grandchildren, Tammy (Doug) VanHouten, Jeromy (Melissa) LaRock, Amanda Ortiz, Susan Levesque; Elisabeth, Faith, and Sara Genter; Jacob, Erika, Lindsey, Eric, Corinne, Zachary, Amber and Max Gilbert; Dawn and Max Coleman; great-great-grandchildren, Nathan VanHouten and Kalena LaRock. Besides his parents, David was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Karen LaRock and a grandson David Genter. A memorial service will take place 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 24th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services.
