Obituary

Cynthia Mary Engwall, 94, of Big Rapids passed away Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Altercare. She was born June 2, 1915 in Big Rapids to Wesley and Iva (Rasmussen) Knisley. Cynthia graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1933 and from Illinois Wesleyan Music School in 1937. She later earned her Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. Cynthia taught in Pawnee, Illinois; then in Michigan at Eaton Rapids, Rockford, Manistee, and Big Rapids. In 1942 she married Clifford Engwall. Cynthia's enthusiasm for the out of doors and new experiences remained strong until the end of her life. These activities ranged from working as a life guard at the old community pool and camp counselor to kayaking, canoeing, and back packing. She camped with friends and her son, Pete, all over the United States. One of her happiest vacations was spent on her son's houseboat in Alaska. In addition, she traveled to Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. She participated in the Senior Olympics and on her 90th birthday was delighted to take a para-glider ride. Music was a big part of Cynthia's life. She played the violin, clarinet, and organ for weddings and church services. Jack Batdorff devoted a "Reflections" column to his memories of her as his piano teacher in Manistee. He attributed his love of music to her influences, describing her as "one great lady" . Other interests included crossword puzzles, cooking, collecting cookbooks and maintaining an extensive correspondence with loved ones. Cynthia is survived by a son, Peter of Mt. Pleasant. She also leaves numerous relatives and friends of every age from all over the world. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, and her only sibling, Philip. A riverside memorial service will be held in June.
