Charles D. King, formerly of the Big Rapids area, passed away at the age of 80 at his home in Traverse City on Friday, March 18, 2022, surrounded by his family. Charles, known as "Chuck", was born in Lansing on February 25, 1942, to the late Harold and Audra (Haydon) King. He attended Mecosta High School where he lettered in several varsity sports and was voted Best All-Around Student. Chuck graduated high school in 1960. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corp. On February 12, 1964, he married Eileen Katke at the Big Rapids First United Methodist Church. Chuck earned a Teaching Degree from Central Michigan University. He taught Physical Education and Industrial Arts and coached many sports, including Varsity Basketball, during his time at Buckley Community School, Morley Stanwood High School, and Mason County Eastern. He went on to earn a Degree in Counseling. After 32 years in the field of education, Chuck retired in 2002. Chuck was talented and creative, enjoyed photography, gardening, lawn scaping, and was a master wood worker. He had an eye for details and loved being outdoors. Chuck was a dedicated, loving, good husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. There was nothing more he enjoyed than spending time at the lake and going to the farmers market; however, the greatest joy in his life was spending time with his grandchildren and watching them play sports. Chuck is survived by his wife of 58 years; two children Charles "Charlie" (Kelly) King and Diann King, all of Traverse City; two grandchildren Charles and Maxwell King; two sisters, Beverly Mull of Blanchard and Sandra (Bill) Hewlett of Remus and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25, 2022 at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the Funeral Service on Friday. A luncheon will directly follow the service at Tullymore Clubhouse, 11969 Tullymore Drive, Stanwood, MI 49346. Chuck will be laid to rest in the Spring at Highland View Cemetery in Big Rapids.
