Obituary

Charles J. "Chuck" Crawford, age 94 of Big Rapids, went to be with his Lord Monday, July 5, 2010 He was born January 23, 1916 in Flint the son of Charles and Grace (Butler) Crawford. Chuck graduated from South Haven High School as president of his class. He earned his Bachelors in Education at Western Michigan University attending on a basketball scholarship and serving as the Class President. Chuck began his 36 year career in education teaching at Traverse City High School, where he also coached debate and golf teams. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Navy serving during World War II and obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. Following the service Chuck traveled the state, serving as the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and later as the Assistant District Supervisor for the Regional Office in Traverse City. During that time he also completed the requirements for a Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance at the University of Michigan. In 1957 Chuck moved to Big Rapids and accepted the position as special counselor to disabled students and foreign students at Ferris State University and eventually became the Associate Director of Admissions until his retirement in 1975. Chuck was a member of several professional organizations. He was active with the Salvation Army and the First Baptist Church of Big Rapids. Chuck loved his family first, his years of teaching and coaching in Traverse City and he also enjoyed golf, fishing and music; especially "Big Band" and "Dixieland" . In 1941 Chuck married the former Betty E. (Fouch) Crawford. They were blessed with nearly 69 years of marriage until Betty's passing just 3 months ago on April 2, 2010. Chuck is survived by his loving family, including his three children; Barbara (Wesley) Knight of Big Rapids, Bruce Crawford of Dearborn, Wendy Crawford (Glenn Essebaggers) of Deerfield Beach, FL; 3 grandchildren, Scott Crawford, Trevor (Verenice) Crawford and Lindsay (Ryan) Goodrich; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Henry LaBar. Private family services have taken place. Those wishing to give a memorial contribution in Chuck's name may do so to either the Salvation Army or the First Baptist Church of Big Rapids.
