Obituary

Carlton "Carl" David Boroff age 81, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 6, 2024, surrounded by his family. Carl was born February 3, 1943, in Sheridan Township. He graduated from Mecosta High School in 1961 and enlisted in the United States Navy. He honorably served on the U.S.S. Neosho during the Cuban Missile Crisis. While Carl was home on leave in 1963, he met his wife Joan and they were married the following year on April 18th. When they left Norfolk Naval Base, they returned to Michigan where they raised their two children.Carl was employed by Mutual Savings and Loan, now known as Independent Bank, for 20 years. He then worked at Michigan Farm Bureau Insurance for ten years until he retired. Carl was a member of the Mecosta VFW Post 2335 since 1968, Big Rapids AmVets Post 1941, and was past president, director, and secretary of Mecosta Osceola United Way. He was a member for over 50 years of the Big Rapids Elks Lodge 974 where he was the secretary for the past 18 years, he was also the secretary of the Big Rapids Jaycees, a past board member of Eagle Village, co-chairperson of Mecosta County American Cancer Society Lockup in 1988 and 1989, past district chairman of SME Program, and was involved in Big Rapids Boy Scouts of America Troop 114 - White Pine District.In his spare time Carl enjoyed fishing, playing in pool tournaments for the Mecosta VFW, golfing, playing cards, and dice. He liked to hunt deer, birds, and rabbits. Carl had a green thumb and looked forward to tending to his rose and vegetable garden. He enjoyed canning and making venison sausage and jerky. Carl was an avid coin and stamp collector. He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.Carl is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Joan; daughter, Carla (Dan) Estes; son, Brent (Koylynn) Boroff; grandchildren, Caleb, Adam (Taliah), and Aaron, Cody, Skyler, Noah, and Evan; great-grandchildren, Finley and Theodore; sisters, Carol (Melvin) Place, Linda (Neil) Witbeck, Becky (Thad) Stevens, and Karen (Michael) Hill; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Forest Maneke and his brothers, Larry and Donald Maneke.Funeral Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Roger Bennett officiating. The family will greet friends Wednesday, April 10th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home with an Elks Funeral Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. The family will also receive friends prior to the funeral on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home. Carl will be laid to rest at Chippewa Lake Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to Chippewa Lake Community Church Building Fund (where he was a member) or Big Rapids Elks Lodge 974 Building Fund.Share a memory or leave a condolence for the family at www.daggettgilbertfuneralhome.com
