Obituary

Carl Metzger passed away peacefully on June 30, 2018 at home in Stanwood, Michigan. Carl was preceded in death in 2012 by his beloved wife Naomi with whom he shared 67 years of marriage following their wedding in 1945. Also preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Don, and his grandson Ian. He is survived by his children, Robert of Lincoln Park, Michigan; Susan (Butchko) of Boynton Beach, Florida; Sherry (Little) of Stanwood, Michigan; Gary of Harrisville, Michigan; and Tim of Riverview, Michigan. Also surviving are his brother Roy and his sister Marian, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Carl was born to Dell and Theresa (Vernier) Metzger in Rockwood, Michigan on November 5, 1924. He lived most of his life in Rockwood until his retirement, at which time he and Naomi moved full time to their home on the Black River, near Cheboygan, Michigan. After many years of life "up north," Naomis health issues forced them to return to the downriver area to be closer to family and more extensive health care facilities. After several years, Carl and Naomi moved in with his daughter Sue and her husband George to better care for Naomi. After Naomis passing, Carl accompanied Sue and George in their relocation to Florida. In recent years, Carl had lived with his daughter Sherry and her husband Phil in Granger, Indiana, and most recently in Stanwood, Michigan. Carl was a long time employee at the former Monsanto plant in Trenton, Michigan, rising to the position of Maintenance Supervisor from which he retired in 1982, after over 30 years of service. Carl served his country in the United States Army from April, 1943 until his honorable discharge in February, 1946. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served with distinction with the 13th Airborne Division in Central Europe, earning a Victory Medal, an American Theater Ribbon, a European-Africa-Middle East Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Battle Star, an Overseas Service Bar, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was designated as a Master Marksman for pistol, rifle, and carbine. His duty specialty was as a Light Machine Gunner. He was a past Commander of the VFW Post in Onaway, Michigan.

Carl was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman, and enjoyed all kinds of fishing and hunting activities. Carl and Naomi traveled extensively through the U.S. during vacations and after his retirement, and they enjoyed up-north visits from their extended family. They always enjoyed meeting new people in their day to day encounters and in their travels.

He was a civic-minded individual, serving for many years as a volunteer member of the Rockwood Fire Department, and also served on the Rockwood Village Council. Carl will be very much missed by his extended family and his many friends. He will be remembered as a strong and loving parent, a devoted grandparent, and a loyal friend.

A memorial service celebrating Carls life will be scheduled at a later date. Share a memory or condolence with the family by clicking the guestbook tab at www.daggettgilbertfuneralhome.com. Contributions in Carls memory may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
