Carl (Sonny) Johansen passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Meceola Currie Comfort Home with family at his side. Sonny was born to Carl and Nina (Martiny) Johansen of Rodney on March 3, 1929. He was the third oldest of a family of fourteen children. Sonny enjoyed bowling with his brothers and nephews for many years. He also loved to fish, especially ice fishing. Watching the Tigers baseball games was a favorite pastime. He was an avid gardener, especially strawberries and potatoes. He enjoyed sharing his produce with friends and family. Neighbors admired his flowers as they drove past the house. Sonny met and married the love of his life, Betty Maneke, on June 3, 1950. The couple enjoyed roller skating at Chippewa Lake and the local dances. Together they raised five sons on a farm near Rodney. Sonny worked for Big Rapids Furniture, The Falcon Pine Shop, Saginaw Steering Gear, in the oil fields and for Wolverine World Wide. Upon retirement he enjoyed farming and working with his son Steve, in the cable plowing business. Sonny is survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty, three sons, Donald (Diane), Steven (Julie), Larry (Kim); five grandchildren, Larry Dean II, Laurie, Landrie, and Mark Johansen, and Alissa McClard (Brian); six great grandchildren, Landen, Mekenzie, Kearstyn, Triston, Brewer and Cooper; and friend of the family, Betsy Ashbaugh. Also surviving are his brother Charles (Judy) and four sisters, IdaMae Maneke, Josephine Ottobre, RuthAnn (Don) McCarthy and Barb (Glenn) Dalton; sisters-in-law, Mary and Betty; many nieces and nephews and God-children Scott Johansen and Stacie Peterson. Sonny was pre-deceased by his parents, his sons Duane and Paul, brothers Norman (Doris), Bob (Adele), Gerald (Pat), Ray, Ed, Glenn and Floyd, sister Arlene (Herb) Wilson and brother-in-law Jim Maneke. Sonny was a life time member of the Big Rapids Eagles #2535. In their later years Sonny and Betty enjoyed going out to breakfast and meeting up with friends. The family will greet visitors at the Dagget Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids on Wednesday, August 23rd from 4 pm to 7 pm. A private burial will be held at a later date at Martiny Township Cemetery.
