A Marine and Vietnam War veteran, animal lover and Euchre shark, Carl Floyd Delong died Oct. 26, 2017, in Barryton, Michigan. He was 77. Carl, the second son of Vern Floyd Delong and Dimple Mae (Sisco) Delong, was born Aug. 13, 1940, in Flint, Michigan. He was a safety patrol boy at McKinley Elementary School, and he started his working life at 14, in 1954, at his fathers Delongs Service Station on Fenton Road. The family later moved to his grandparents farm, and Carl attended school in Barryton. In 1958, Carl returned to Flint and worked in the Chevrolet Assembly Plant, eventually becoming a parts supervisor. He was a decorated Marine, serving the Corps as an aircraft engine mechanic and proudly performing combat service in Vietnam from May 1966 to June 1967. After he was discharged as a sergeant Feb. 12, 1968, Carl returned to work at Chevy in Flint. He retired Jan. 1, 1991, after 32 years of service.
