Bruce C. Hampel, age 89, a lifelong resident of Martiny Township, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born June 6, 1925 in Martiny Township, the son of Theodore and Goldie Marie (Miller) Hampel. Bruce married Evelyn May Maguire on December 23, 1945 and together they made their home on the family farm in Martiny Township. Bruce was a farmer his entire life; raising beef cattle and award winning horses. He also worked as a rough neck on the oil rigs and worked in construction. Bruce was a member of the Chippewa Lake Community Church, Eagles Aerie #2535 of Big Rapids, the Michigan Draft Horse Association and he was a leader for the Mecosta County 4-H for many years. Together, Bruce and Evelyn enjoyed many years of dancing; Polka, Waltz, Square dance and even danced on roller skates. Bruce will be remembered as a well-respected, fair and hardworking man and a vital member of his community. He will be forever missed by his beloved family, including his wife of 69 years, Evelyn Hampel of Rodney; children, Kay (John) Reid of Rodney, Rex (Barbara) Hampel of Rodney, Kathy (Douglas) Carroll of Barryton; grandchildren, Jamie (Frank) Bissett, Justin (Amy) Hampel, Aaron (Jamie) Hampel, Nicole (Eric) Damveld; great-grandchildren, Hayven and Westyn Hampel and two great-grandchildren to join the family in June 2015; a sister, Joy Blakely; a brother, Keith (Priscilla) Hampel, all of Lake Odessa and many nieces and nephews . Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, June Morlock, Linda Bergerow; three brothers-in-law, Clare Blakely, Richard Morlock and Chuck Bergerow; Eddie and MaryDale Herbenar and John Miller II. Funeral services will take place 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 9th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Roger Bennett officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be 4:00 p.m. Monday, May 11th at the Martiny Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Bruce's name may be made to the American Alzheimer's Association or Spectrum Health Hospice.
