Obituary

Betty Jean (Stoll) Thompson, age 81 of Weidman passed away Friday, May 18, 2007 at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant after a long battle with cancer. Betty was born March 9, 1926 in Wacousta, Michigan the only child of John and J. Myrl (King) Stoll. Betty attended a one room school house on her parent's farm until her high school days. She then attended and graduated from Lansing Sexton High School in 1943. Betty attended Central Michigan College and then worked for a short time at Auto Owners Insurance in Lansing. On October 28, 1950 she married James P. Thompson in Lansing, Michigan. He preceded her in death on October 21, 2002. After their marriage they made their home on his family farm in Weidman, where they resided until their deaths. Betty and Jim had two sons, Robert (Bob) and William (Bill). Betty was proud to have grown up on a farm outside of Lansing where she helped her father with the old style threshing machines. She continued with farming life after her marriage to Jim. Following in her parents tradition, she was a lifetime (50 year plus) member of the Wacousta and Weidman Chapters of the Eastern Star. Betty served the organization in many leadership roles over her years of membership, always willing to step forward to serve. Betty was honored for her years of service in 2002 when presented with her lifetime membership award. Following her mother-in-law, Betty joined the Busy Bees. She served as an officer and enjoyed the friendship the ladies of this group provided. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church. In her children's school days she traveled with the Youth Group to their many activities, always willing to drive and chaperone the young people. Betty and her husband, Jim enjoyed traveling. With their children they criss-crossed the United States by automobile several times during their life together. For their fiftieth wedding anniversary, Betty took her first airplane flight, as she and Jim traveled to Hawaii. Betty is survived by: two sons, Robert (Bob) and Shirley Thompson of Weidman and William (Bill) and Deb Thompson of Mason, three grandchildren, Ann, Ellen and Brian Thompson, all of Weidman. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in her death by her husband, James and her parents John and Myrl Stoll. The family will greet friends on Monday, May 21st from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at the Weidman United Methodist Church.
