Obituary

Betty Lorraine Stilson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on July 12, 2025. She was born December 1, 1936, the youngest child to Alpha Sr. and Florence Cogswell in Lakeview, Michigan.

In October of 1955, Betty married Harvey Stilson building a legacy together of which would span over 55 years and include 3 children; Robert, Barbara, and Steven.

Betty worked over 15 years at Wolverine and in later years was a floral designer for Phil's Flowers, a job she very much enjoyed.

Her legacy also lives on through her 7 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Each-and-every child throughout the generations had a special place in her heart – from being at the birth of the first one nearly 50 years ago to seeing a picture the newest born a week before her passing and wishing she could just hold her.

Trips to Mackinaw City, patiently sewing pillows for a first home, baking cookies, rushing to granny's house because there was candy waiting, sharing a story about their baseball game and how granny played first base, that you better behave, or you'd get the slipper (which never happened) and that EVERY child born throughout the generations looked just like her are great memories to name a few. Her lessons and love created lasting bonds and cherished memories which are endless and will be remembered for many years to come.

Betty was known for her quick wit, and sense of humor. In her younger years, Betty had a zest for life -- roller skating with her dear friend Naomi and playing softball taking the position of 1st base very seriously. A good basketball game on TV was well worth her staying up late for. Her passion for cards was well-known. She never turned down a Euchre game and would go to the Senior Center every chance she could to play, building many friendships there.

She imparted to her children not just practical skills, but also the invaluable knowledge of how to survive a hard time, a testament to her resilience and unwavering hope for their futures. She always had an open ear, and it was rare to leave her home without being offered something to take along with you.

Years after the passing of her beloved husband, Betty found companionship with her special friend, Bruce Carlson, who also predeceased her.

Betty is survived by her children Barbara J. Richards (Steve), Steve Stilson (Penny), and daughter-in-law Mary Stilson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Harvey, son Robert, and all her siblings.

Also mourning her loss is her 4 legged pal and McDonald's companion Otis; along with special friends Lou Ann, Sheila, Ruth, and Jane.

The family would like to thank Emmanuel Hospice for their tender care and Daggett Gilbert Funeral home to which they have entrusted to her care.

Per her request there will be no service. A private family gathering will take place in the future.
