Obituary

Betty E. Powell, age 91 of Morley, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 in Grand Rapids. She was born August 17, 1927 in Norwich, England the daughter of Francis and Ellen (Blyth) Barker. Betty married Corporal Ralph Powell in England while he was serving with the United States Army in August 1942. She sailed from England with their son, "Butch", in 1946 on the Queen Mary, which had been converted into a "War Bride" ship. She became a naturalized United States citizen, which then gave her dual citizenship for the U.S. and England. Bettys husband owned and operated a tow truck garage in the Village of Morley while Betty worked at Wolverine World Wide for over 20 years. She later worked as a bookkeeper at a Lakeview apartment complex and finished her working career at the Lakeview McDonalds. Betty enjoyed simple things in life; her family, camping, building bonfires and especially Diet Coke on the front porch with her daughter. She is survived by her grandchildren, Rosalie (John) Wallace of Midland, Dina (Alan) Scott of Morley, Gary Powell of Morley, Brian (Lindsey) Schouw of Portland, Jeannie (John) Cain of Tennessee, Scott (Gloria) Creighton of Florida, Cindy (Tonda) Dow of Grand Rapids; a grand-daughter-in-law, Rita Bush of Hudsonville; many great-grandchildren; a Brother, Peter Barker of England and many nieces and nephews. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ralph Powell; son, Butch Powell; two daughters, Lucy Schouw, Jeanette Greene; grandsons Jeff Bush, Todd Bush; three sisters, Janet Batemen, Joan Cleall, Pat West; a brother, George Barker and her dear friend Jack Parsons. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2018 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with the family greeting friends at 11:30 a.m. until services at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Aetna Township in Morley. Memorial contributions in Bettys name may be made to the Mecosta County Commission on Aging.
