Obituary

Betty Schooley Gawne age 78, a lifelong resident of Reed City, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at her home. She was born on May 5, 1945 to Virgil and Maella (Vincent) Schooley in Reed City. Betty grew up on the family farm helping her father through her high school days, milking cows and doing field work; loving the farm to the end. Betty loved the outdoors, nature, and animals. She graduated from Reed City High School in 1963 and started her first job at Osceola Refining Company. In 1969 her first son Darin was born and in 1973 her son Jason was born. Betty loved her sons and would take them fishing, hunting, trapping, snowmobiling, and any other outdoor activity. As the boys grew up, in 1981 Betty started working for the Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District. She worked in the Special Education Center in Big Rapids as well as other programs in the district. Eagle Village was part of the program and her love for children kept her there until her retirement in 2006. At that point in life, she and her husband Steve Lareva made a dream trip to Alaska. Steve passed away in 2010. Betty was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Reed City. She was the "Sunshine person" sending cards to many throughout the years. She also worked for Chase Township as Treasurer and as a voting board member for the election committee. Betty had many friends throughout her life and she loved them all. She always followed the sporting events and activities her grandchildren participated in; whether it was hot, snow, sleet, or rainshe was there. Betty loved her family very much. She is survived by her sons, Darin (Michelle) Gawne of Baldwin and Jason (Kelly) Gawne of Reed City; her grandchildren whom she loved very much, Logan (Kate) Gawne, Megan (Wyatt) Fuller, and Carter Gawne; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Charlotte; special sister, Joyce Brocker; two sisters, Nancy Weck and Cindy Erbes; and several nieces and nephews.
