Obituary

Bessie P. Andrews, age 70 of Morley, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. She was born on May 21, 1940 in Neashoba Co., Mississippi to Verda and Gladys (Nowell) Bryan. Bessie moved to Grand Rapids then to Rockford where her children were raised. She was employed by the Rockford School System for numerous years and was always willing to help in any position. In the early 1980's she made her home in Morley where she has resided ever since. Bessie enjoyed volunteering and was active in her community. In April of 1996 she joined the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. In the last 15 years she has helped seek funding, aided in planning events, fundraising and helped with the recognition awards banquet. Not only was she an avid volunteer for RSVP she was the Chairperson for the Advisory Council, honorary member of the Board of Directors and sat on the Camp 911 and Senior Enrichment Day committees. She was the past president of the Howard City V.F.W. Post #3306 Women's Auxiliary and volunteered at the Morley Senior Center before it closed in 2010. Bess also enjoyed camping at the Buckley Old Engine Show and was a member of the Luther Bible Chapel. She is survived by three sons; James White of Grand Rapids, Joe (Dawn) White of Morley and John Andrews of Grand Rapids; 8 grandchildren, Christopher, Tommy, Andrew and Rebecca White, Amanda and David Ross, Sarah (Danny) Vincent and John B. Andrews; 5 great-grandchildren, Anastacia "Anna" White, Andy White, Brooklyn and Kenneth Vincent and Hayden Andrews; 5 brothers, Bobby "Duke" (Nancy), Bennie (Avis), Billy (Linda), Aaron (Darlene) Bryan all of Mississippi and David (Martha) Bryan of Louisiana; 6 sisters, Evelyn Fulton, Naomi (Otis) Beckham, Nellie (Tommy) Woodard, Ruby "Verdain" Glenn, Mary (Roger) Burkeen and Lula (Eddy) Bryan all of Mississippi; 1 half sister Mildred Strout of Mississippi, numerous nieces, nephews and several friends and loved ones who knew her as grandma or ma. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James "Andy" Andrews on December 5, 2007 and 5 brothers, Haley, Forest, Frank, Roy and Randy as a small child. Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Rev. Philip Bongard and Rev. Kalvin "Butch" Bryan officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday, April 15th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Aetna Township Cemetery in Morley. Memorial donations can be made to the Howard City V.F.W. or Mecosta County RSVP.
