Bernard F. "Bernie" Johnson age 84 of Big Rapids passed Saturday, September 10, 2016. He was born November 11, 1931 in Stanton the son of Philip and Effie (Sodman) Johnson. Bernie moved to Big Rapids as a young man. He managed Roben-Hood Airport for the City of Big Rapids and was a flight instructor. Bernie later worked for ANR Pipeline as a patrol pilot, over several states, until his retirement. Bernie was a life member of Big Rapids Elks #974 and Big Rapids Masonic Lodge #171; he was also a member of the Lakeland Shrine Club. In his spare time, Bernie liked to boat, water ski and play golf. Bernie is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Ardith "Ardy" Johnson; three step-sons, Steven (Rosalyn) Jorgensen, Larry (Nichole) Jorgensen, Greg (Diana) Jorgensen all of Big Rapids, nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis (Paul) Forsythe of Arizona; two brothers, Bruce (Ruth Ann) Johnson, Wayne (Carolyn) Johnson all of Stanton and many nieces and nephews. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Geraldine Peterson. Private family services will take place at a later date.
