Barbara G. Rekeny, age 90 of Big Rapids, passed away unexpectedly Monday, March 14, 2022 at her home. She was born in Ludington on March 27, 1931, the daughter of George and Bertha (Lee) Winegar. Barbara was a 1949 graduate of Big Rapids High School.

She married John Rekeny and together they made their home in the Big Rapids area. Barbara was a busy wife and mother; she took care of the home and children while John was on the road with the oil company, gas line construction company, and later while he ran his own business, Rekeny Water and Sanitation. Barbara also had a soft spot for her pet cats.

She is survived by her four children, Christine (David) Birdsong of Battle Creek, John T. (Beth) Rekeny of Walker, Amy Rekeny of Big Rapids, and Patty "P.J." (Russell) Peacock of Big Rapids; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters Sandra (William) Gentile and Nancy Rekeny, grandson Christopher Birdsong, four brothers, and one sister.

Mass of the Resurrection will take place 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids with Father Jegar Fickel officiating. The family will greet one hour prior to the service at the Church. Barbara will be laid to rest at Highland View Cemetery in Big Rapids at a later date.
