Avery R. Russell, 93 of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at Mecosta County Medical Center in Big Rapids. He was born on January 23, 1917 in Six Lakes, MI the son of Roy and Hatti (Wood) Russell. Avery graduated from Lakeview High School. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps after serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Avery retired from Hitachi in Edmore. He was a life member, a charter member and a past post commander of V.F.W. Post #5603 in Six Lakes, a life member of the Gleaners, a member of the Grange and current member of the United Church of Big Rapids. Avery enjoyed golfing, gardening and was an avid Tiger Fan. Avery is survived by his loving wife Rose Ella Russell of Big Rapids, daughter; Patricia (James) Peracchio of Middletown, Conn; Stepchildren, Betty Goldammer of Big Rapids, Nancy (John) Fairman of Manhattan, Kansas, Donald (Bonnie) Dunn of Big Rapids, Linda (Doug) Mann of West Layfette, Indiana; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Avery was preceded in death by a son James A. Russell, two grandsons, Alan Witt and Kurt Dunn; one brother and three sisters. With respect to Avery's wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the United Church in Big Rapids with Pastor Jon Fleming officiating. Inurnment will be at the Cato Cemetery near Lakeview. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Avery's name can be made to Project Starburst Food Pantry at the United Church (120 S. State St.) of Big Rapids.
