Aleta Lou (Axtmann) Hursh, 2/7/1933-4/10/2022
Aleta (Axtmann) Hursh peacefully passed away on April 10, 2022 at the age of 89. Born in South Bend, Indiana, Aleta grew up in Lansing, MI, graduating from Sexton High School in 1950, where she was class secretary, a cheerleader, and homecoming queen. Most of the weekends of her childhood were spent at Horsehead Lake, Mecosta County. A storyline in Aletas life was her athleticism. In 1948, she began downhill skiing. In 1950, she won the Michigan Amateur Open and Interclub Senior Womens Championships at Caberfae Ski Area. Aleta attended Michigan State in 1951-52 where she participated as a cheerleader. The allure of competition made her leave Michigan State and move to Sun Valley, Idaho in 1953, which at that time, was the nations hub for the most serious in downhill ski racing culture. She competed in races throughout the West, and in 1954 won the coveted Lindley Award as the champion at the Sun Valley Ski Club competition. This placed her at the top, being one of the elite womens downhill ski racers in the nation. An amazing achievement in her petite, 50", 115 lb frame. Aleta was passionate about education, completing her BS Degree in Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. Aleta taught Physical Education at Reno, High School from 1964-1970. Aleta taught Physical Education, Biology, Physiology, and coached gymnastics at Chippewa Hills High School (Remus, Michigan) from 1970-1990. In 1978, Aleta achieved her Masters Degree at Central Michigan University. Throughout much of Aletas life she downhill skied, cross-country skied, water skied, and ice-skated. Aleta loved animals, including riding and showing her horses, and she always had a menagerie of pets, some known to appear as educational subjects in her biology classes. Aleta spent her retired years living in Reno, Nevada where she enjoyed the outdoors and her fine art water-color paintings. Aleta is survived by daughter Brigette (Johnson) Reed (Paul) of Big Rapids, Michigan, son Jack Hursh of Reno, Nevada, grandchildren Paul, Heather, Holly, and several great-grandchildren.
